   You'd best contact the ARRL, they should have all the info needed

   You will need reciprocal licences for both the Irish republic and for
the United Kingdom. You might have trouble even getting your radio into
the country without one (or might not... enforcement is a little
variable)

    UK 2 metre band is only 144.000 to 146.000  usual channel spacing is
25kHz, with some people using 12.5 kHz.   Repeaters have input freq 600
kHz below output freq.

   Simplex FM calling on 145.500

   repeater outputs usually  145.600    "R0"
                             145.625    "R1"
                             145.675    "R2"
                             145.700
                             145.725    etc.
                             145.750
                             145.775


   Don't transmit above 146

    There are fewer repeaters than you are likely used to, none are
private, none are closed. One of their licence conditions is that they
must be available to all licenced radio amateurs. Unfortunately some in
the London area are prone to jammers.

   In this country it is illegal (fines, jail, confiscation of all
radios) to listen to anything that you do not have a specific licence
for - this means ANYTHING other than broadcasters and amateurs. The
police are growing aware of scanners and have made total fools of some
people scanning their radio systems with spoof reports of flying saucers
used to get the eavesdroppers to go see, and be arrested.  Cases are
rare, but it is most unwise to wander around a city with police, fire, etc
noises coming out of your radio.

Subject: Callsign change

I am new to this group, so pardon me if this has been asked recently.
I have not transmitted anything in the last 3 years due to the usual
reasons (new job, new house, new kid, no time).  Now that I am getting
things back into shape, I would like to know what the FCC regs are in
regards to a change of callsign.  I moved from New Mexico where I had
the call KA5WTO.  I would like that changed to reflect my new district
(3), and at the same time reflect my Advanced class.  Is this possible,
or do I just sign /3 forever?

        I'd like to have some good quality coaxial cable. Can you give
        me any suggestions if you know?

        I am making a project on global position system. Previously, I used
        a coaxial cable of 10 M to connect the antenna and the GPS together.
        It worked normally. However, when I change the cable to be 80 M in
        length, I can't get any signals. I suspect that the signal loss in
        such a long cable is very great. So I want to buy a cable of
        better quality to reduce the loss.

        Now, I am using a 50 ohm cable, RG-58 A/U!

Hi Frankie,
  Your suspicions about the cable are absolutely correct.  RG-58 is horrible
at the GPS frequencies.  ANY RG-8 type cable is better than RG-58, but you
may want to invest the extra bucks in Belden 9913 (or equiv).  It's about the
best RG-8 type cable around for the money.  It's low loss and has a semi-hollow
dielectric which makes it a little more difficult to solder on connectors.
With a little care, you should be OK, though.

Subject: Dayton Parking: Hell on Earth!

Well folks, if you've read the latest Ham Radio Newsline you MIGHT have
noticed the casual mention that their MIGHT(?) not be busses available
to shuttle people around from hotels to Hara this year.

I tended to take my car anyways and pay the $5 to park in the field on
the east side of HARA... but if those busses are not available... be
prepared to spend HOURS in what will undoubtedly be the worse traffic
jam this side of L.A.

Anyone remember the rain two (or three?) years back?  That field turned
into a swamp trapping dozens of cars and RV's for the weekend.  Imagine
it with... say... 6,000 more cars?

Is anyone associated with DARA on the net?  What "improvements" do you
folks plan to make with the money saved on not providing the WONDERFUL
bus service?  The hamvention is the greatest event in all of ham radio
and short of moving to a bigger city, I can't think of anything you
could do to make it better.  Well, there are those grey hot dogs they
sell... but that's Ohio for you.

I'm not out to scare anyone away (heh heh) but that guy who posted the
"Jesus is coming" thread can rest easy because not even the Lord himself
will be able to get out of the traffic jam around Dayton on April 29th!

If you're talking about QST, I disagree 100%.  I wish QST had MORE
construction articles, not fewer. In case you haven't noticed, QST
has changed in the last few years.  There are many fewer technical
articles than there used to be and a lot more fiction and other
"fluff" articles.

I liked it better the old way.  But fortunately or unfortunately,
the ARRL is a democratic organization and their perception is that
the members are not as technically inclined as they used to be.

This is the first in a series in response to letters,  messages,
and queries at seminars.

Probably the biggest problem with these bulletins, and one that
may never be resolved, is misinterpretation or misunderstanding
of the written word. What is intended by the writer and how it is
interpreted by the readers may not be the same. When RACES
seminars are conducted in person it is much easier to clarify
issues that arise over such misinterpretation as well as others.

Whereas these BULLETINS are called "RACES" they are for all
communications volunteers in government service. This includes
Public Safety, RACES and the Civil Air Patrol.

The current RACES BULLETIN series began in l985. It was the first
effort to document program issues, ideas, definitions and
guidance since 1960. They went national in 1989 at the request of
the ARRL. In response, you have rewarded us with positive
feedback, input and support from all over the U.S., Canada and
Australia, for which we are most appreciative.

Series authored by Stanly E. Harter, originally titled "From My
Lookout". Edited for digital transmission. Uploaded by unpaid
[volunteer] professionals in public safety and public service

Quite the contrary.  I found one by accident, and while waiting for a
simple cup of coffee I could tell the two cars who had ordered before me
were going to cause a 15 minute + wait.  I decided quickly (because I'd
heard the order/reply/sleepiness of the clerk) that maybe I should go
elsewhere.  Had I not heard what was in front of me, I'd probably have
waited until I was fuming mad and then left.  So now, I don't need blood
pressure treatment! :)

Actually - any radio broadcast has it's usefulness.  Its up to the
listener to decide what that usefulness is. (and it's legality, of
course, disclaimer alert, etc, etc, etc)
